Benign (harmless) cysts can occur at any stage of a women’s life but are more common in her child bearing years. A few post menopausal women will get them, but this is not common. Ovaries only release follicles during the child bearing years. This is why pre-menopause is the only time that cysts happen. Any type of cyst has the potential to cause pain or to rupture, but many woman are not aware they have them as they will experience no pain.

There are a few main different types of cysts as follows;

Functional Cysts – Also known as simple cysts. These are easily treatable and happen during the ovulation phase of your menstrual cycle. Fluid builds up when the egg is not released each month. They resolve by their own accord.

Graafian Follicle Cyst. – A type of simple cyst. It is also called the follicular cyst.

Corpus Luteum Cyst – Prone to rupturing during a women’s period. They will resolve themselves over the course of three months.

Hemorrhagic Cyst – Also called a blood cyst. Generally occurs when a blood vessel in the wall of the cyst breaks and blood enters the cyst. Unilateral pain is usually the presenting feature of this type of cyst. As blood fills the cyst, the cyst will swell causing the pain. Sometimes these types of cysts can rupture and blood will pour into the abdominal cavity, this is extremely painful. Surprisingly surgical intervention is not always needed and the cyst will resolve itself. If this is the case, pain may be present for 4 – 10 days after the rupture and rest is advised.
