A cold sore is an infection which is caused by a certain virus called herpes simplex. This virus is quite common and the viral infection usually occurs in and around the oral cavity. But there are also times when the nose is included in the oral cavity infection and there are also occurrences of cold sore virus symptoms in the eyes. The occurrence of the cold sore in the eyes is caused by the virus making a wrong turn as it makes its way to the nerves going to the mouth and oral cavity.

Cold sores are usually preceded by a marked tingling in some areas of the oral cavity as well as around the oral cavity. This stage is known as prodrome, and directly precedes the development of the cold sore blisters themselves. The virus progresses to create an overabundance of blisters in the affected area. Since the blisters are open and oozing, these lead to pain and extreme discomfort, resulting in difficulty with oral function. Bigger blisters, which result from the combination of two or more smaller blisters, can be more painful and more prone to slower healing time. Another of the more serious symptoms of a cold sore is the pain that is felt in the mouth. The degree of pain may affect the person’s ability to speak, eat and swallow. This symptom can lead to dehydration and hunger if the condition persists for several days.

Since children can be affected by this virus, their plight may be more dangerous than adults. Younger children are prone to bouts of cold sore attacks since they have not developed strong immune systems yet. Fever may be dangerous for younger children since their systems may not be equipped to handle the elevated temperatures as yet. Among the serious symptoms of cold sore attacks, a fever is the most common for younger children.

Cold sore symptoms in the eyes include tearing in the eyes, marked redness, slight pain and sometimes the appearance of an ulcer. The eyes are quite sensitive which is why is it imperative to treat the cold sore immediately to minimize any scarring which may be caused by the ulcers. Severe scarring in the cornea may eventually affect the person’s eyesight, causing partial blindness or some change in a person’s vision.

It is best to use topical medication to deal with an existing outbreak. The most effective long term treatment, however, may lie in treating the virus itself. While the cure of the herpes simplex virus is still elusive as of now, controlling the recurrence of the viral infection may be possible.
