By the year 2015 – an all too short 7 years from now – three quarters of U.S. adults are expected to be obese or overweight. Beyond an issue of physical looks, obesity brings risks of many health related dangers, issues which will only grow as an increasing amount of us do.

Of course our obesity epidemic is hardly surprising when you consider that we Americans take in between 150-300 more calories per day than we did 25 years ago. There are many reasons why this has happened. Fast foods, processed and prepared meals, constantly increasing portion sizes, too few good fats and too many bad ones, not to mention an unfortunate and regularly expanding selection of calorie laden drinks.

Our modern tastes have become accustomed to calories in liquid form, like energy drinks, flavored waters and coffee drinks. The problem is that all those liquid calories aren’t so easy to keep track of, and they add up quickly. Calories in liquid form simply don’t satisfy your hunger in the same way as solid food, and many of the liquids we drink without really thinking have little, if any, nutritional value.

Experts understand that the process of drinking calories, not needing to chew or take steps to prepare as you ordinarily would with a solid food meal, allow these types of calories to slide aside of your calorie counting radar, unnoticed.

Removing those calories which provide the least amount of nutrition will help in your efforts to lose weight. Cut the least satisfying, and least nutritious, calories first, then move on.

On reading drinks labels you should primarily be looking for the the amount of calories contained – don’t worry about the list of ingredients for now. Even so-called healthy drinks can contribute extra calories as well. Ultimately, it’s the number of calories, whether solid or liquid form, that matters.

So, if your objective is to lose weight, your best drink choice is to move more towards zero calorie, natural water. If you don’t feel ready to make the switch to sugar free drinks immediately, try sugared water until you get used to a less sweet taste.
