Four Keys to Keep from Gaining Weight in College
University life is all about gaining experience and an education to provide you with the tools you’ll need to enter the workforce. If you bear in mind a few simple things as you head off for your freshman year, it shouldn’t lead to gaining weight. As you think about outfitting your first dorm room, take along this simple list of suggestions to keep in mind.
1. Make smart choices at the cafeteria. Try to avoid rich and heavy casseroles, fried entries and baked desserts. Instead, start opting for vegetarian dishes that are almost always offered. Make use of the salad bar and always choose light dressings. Keep in mind that each meal should include something from each of the five food groups: protein from meat (beans or eggs), grains, dairy, fruit and vegetables. Another good idea is to stop by the cafeteria often for small, healthy snacks instead of eating three big meals every day.
2. Buy or rent a small refrigerator for you dorm room so that you can control your own snacking. Stock it with fat-free yogurt, fresh fruit, sugar-free juices and even string cheese and nuts.
3. Keep the drinking to a minimum. At the very least, be aware of the caloric intake you are imbibing every time you order another round at happy hour. Beer is 150 calories, white wine is 119 and whiskey and Coke is 129. Drinking eight glasses of water is highly suggested, so why not order one in between cocktails throughout the party? It will help keep your bar tab down and your head clear in the process.
4. Keep yourself moving by joining a sports league or signing up for work-out classes at the university gym. It’s a great way to meet people, as well as offset all of those dormant hours you’ll spend sitting in class and studying at the library. Also, try to walk to classes instead of hoping on a bus. Dancing is another great way to burn calories.
Remember, you’ll want to meet new people and engage in social activities rather than eat during stressful times. Your first year away at college is full of exciting new challenges. Just make sure that fitting into your jeans isn’t one of them!
