Hypnosis – What It Is And What It Is Not
Hypnosis and its healing offshoot, hypnotherapy, have always been steeped in myths. People either believe them to be falling in the domain of the occult, or don’t regard them to be serious scientific pursuits. Following are some of the popular misconceptions about hypnosis and the truth behind them.
There is no practice of occult involved in hypnosis. Psychology and several other scientific disciplines have an important role to play in the hypnotic procedure, and it is very simple to imbibe and practice. Even people who have witnessed hypnosis on others often refuse to acknowledge it. They say that hypnotised people allow practitioners to perform well in their art by not displaying enough mental strength to block the effect of their words. But that is simply not the truth. Hypnosis can in fact work on people who are mentally strong and are trying their best to resist the spell.
Another belief is that hypnosis is an alternate state of consciousness, which again is a big misconception. A person under hypnosis does not get segregated from the external world, but stays completely conscious of the goings on around him. That individual is just in a calm state where the attention spans are very high and the person can accept suggestions easily.
Another myth, which has been propagated by some scientists, claims that hypnosis can be applied on merely 5% of humans. Researchers have hit upon this low percentage because they have used the same hypnosis technique on all subjects without considering their individual traits. People differ in their characters and personalities, and hence there have to be different hypnosis methods to suit the temperaments of different people.
Meditation and hypnosis are often thought to be the same by people. But while hypnosis is a communication technique, meditation is all about a state of mind and normally has nothing to do with communication. The state of trance and the state of hypnosis are entirely different from each other too. Just like meditation, trance is a state of mind, and it is not associated with communication in any manner, while the very basis of the hypnosis technique is communication.
It is often believed that hypnosis training or hypnotherapy cannot bring transformations in physique or in patterns of conduct of a person. Hypnosis certainly cannot transform the body in unnatural ways. However, it can propel the body to a healthy shape through behavioural changes like eating less, and quitting smoking and other addictive habits by ensuring a high level of motivation in a person.
Hypnosis, and specifically hypnotherapy, can have a significant function to play in the well-being of a person, and not giving them a try just because of some misconceptions is an act of folly.
