Eczema can be treated, but before we start discussing the various methods you have to understand that it is a condition where the skin of the sufferer goes very dry and flaky. It is very common in young children. There are varying degrees of severity of this condition but there is one blessing, it is not contagious.

It will be very noticeable if you do suffer from this condition. Your skin will start to itch all the time and become very red. In more severe cases of the condition you might even find that your skin starts to weep.

In order to successfully treat the problem you must first stop it from getting any worse. And the easiest way is not to scratch it, because that will cause the skin to bleed and split open, which will make it very vulnerable to infection. If it does get infected there are oral and topical antibiotics that will kill the bacteria. It is very easy to say do not scratch it but the temptation is intense. In order to alleviate the problem you must keep the skin moist by the application of ointments and creams over the affected area. One of the best times to apply the creams is directly after bathing so that any moisture gets trapped in your skin.

To try and combat the inflammation you could apply a cold compress to the affected area, but you might find a better way is to purchase some cortisosteroid from the drug store. This has been designed to reduce inflammation. Barring all these treatments you could pay your doctor a visit and see what they recommend. Take heed though, a lot of the treatments will come with possible side effects so look out for the warning signs.

Creams and ointments will not be any use if you have very severe itching. If that is the case then your doctor will prescribe a sedative antihistamine. These are available in both over-the-counter and prescription form. Since feeling drowsy is a common side effect, this is usually taken in the evening enabling you to get a good night’s sleep.

For those who want to try another method to treat the condition there are tar treatments and photo-therapy. There is only one problem with using tar treatment and that is it is extremely messy. If you feel that nothing will ever help you then as a last resort you could try a drug called cyclosporine A. This will modify the body’s immune response system but you have to be aware that it is known to have some serious side effects.

People who suffer from atopic dermatitis, which is another form of skin condition, have two topical medications to pick from. They have both been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. These are tacrolimus and pimecrolimus. They are both in a class of drug known as calcineurin inhibitors. These work by modulating your immune response. The good news is that they do not have any side effects, even during long term use.

The itching and pain of the skin condition known as eczema can be alleviated by eczema cream. Eczema creams soothe the itching and burning and assist in preventing secondary infections.
