The Lurking Dangers of GMO Food
There are many people that are becoming more concerned about the lurking dangers of GMO food. GMO, or genetically modified organisms food, is food that’s been genetically altered in a laboratory. This food has been available for use since the early 1990′s so its too soon to know what the long term dangers of GMO food will be.
One of the dangers of GMO food is that it could pose a threat to people with food allergies who may eat the food not realizing it has been modified with an allergen. Studies have shown that food that has been altered with proteins from a different food will cause an allergic reaction in people allergic to that protein.
It is also believed that people that consume GMO food will process the engineered traits of the food they’ve consumed. This means that if a food is grown to resist certain toxins, the people that eat this food could become resistant to some medications such as antibiotics. The mere fact that scientist weren’t able to predict this is additional proof that there is not enough known about the dangers of GMO food.
Even though the dangers of GMO food are not fully known, nearly 70% of the food in the U.S. has been genetically altered. These foods include those like soybeans, corn, bananas, potatoes, sugar cane, soy beans, and tomatoes.
One reason that people are concerned about the dangers of GMO food is that a number of the foreign genes that are used to alter the DNA of food come from bacteria and viruses that haven’t been a part of the human food supply at any time in the history of man.
The possible dangers of GMO foods can be truly frightening. Thanks to the genetic medication that results from DAN shuffling, scientists can create super viruses in the laboratory in mere minutes. These viruses have never existed in nature. The viruses, if introduced into the food supply would have unknown consequences.
Studies have not been done yet on the dangers of GMO food and the effects it has on unborn and developing children. These foods have been part of our food supply since the 1990′s, and it is known that autism among children has risen dramatically during the past few decades. It is unclear whether there is a connection or not.
People’s fears about the dangers of GMO food could be put aside if the effect of this food on humans were to be studied thoroughly. There is far too much that is unknown at this point in time and this is what leads to uncertainty and fear.
A good arguing point of those who oppose GMO foods is that humans have never eaten this food and it is an unnatural diet. One could logically assume that would have a disastrous effect upon human health. The dangers of GMO food may go beyond a mere heath issue and actually cause harm as happened with GMO L-tryptophan that sickened thousands of people and killed around 100 before it was pulled from the market.
If you have any fears concerning the dangers of GMO food, it would be a good idea to investigate what you’re eating. You will likely be very shocked to discover the amount of GMO food that you eat every day. If you want to remove GMO foods from your diet, look for products that are labeled as GMO-free or grown your own food using non-GMO seeds. Remember, you are responsible for you own health and until more is known about the dangers of GMO food.
